In view of the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic in France, the time is not for easing health constraints, French government spokesperson Gabriel Attal said on Monday.
France is registering new cases of contamination, the number of which currently fluctuates between 22,000 and 24,000 daily. Hospital pressure also remains high, with 25,269 patients with Covid-19 hospitalized, including more than 3,300 in intensive care, according to health authorities.
“It goes back a little” and “the trend is unfortunately not to loosen the constraint,” said the spokesperson for the French executive in statements relayed by the country’s media.
“This virus can still surprise us,” he admitted, referring to the uncertainties about the spread of the different variants that have appeared, but “that does not mean that there is a fatality. “
The spokesperson also reiterated the government’s objective, which is to avoid as much as possible a third generalized confinement of the country.
While the country’s media claim that the government plans to establish local containment in the city of Nice (Alpes Maritimes, south-eastern France), facing an outbreak of the epidemic, the spokesperson refused to ‘to say more about the new health measures expected in this department, simply confirming that “it is imminent”. “The only thing that we exclude is a decision without local consultation,” he added.
The spokesperson also defended the executive’s vaccine strategy, assuring that “France is the country of the European Union in which there have been the most” of first injections of the vaccine, and where the average age of first people vaccinated is the highest.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday it was “too early to decide” in favor of relaxing or tightening the restriction measures, “giving himself 8 to 10 days” to decide, as scientists plan a “complicated” month of March, as regards the circulation of the epidemic in the country.
