The announcement of the company followed its announcement Federal Aviation Administration of the United States (FAA) on accelerating controls in 777 aircraft with Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines.
United said it would continue discussions with US authorities “in order to decide on any additional steps that may be needed to ensure that the aircraft in question meet the strict safety rules and can return to active service “.
The FAA has said it expects the new inspections to require the temporary departure of some aircraft from active service.
According to the same service, United Airlines is the only airline in the United States to use 777 aircraft with the listed engines.
The same aircraft are in use by airlines in Japan and in South Korea, according to the FAA.
“We have examined all available security data since yesterday [προχθεσινό] incident, “the FAA said in a statement. “Based on the initial information, we conclude that the test interval should be accelerated to the turbine blades that are unique to this engine model, which is only used by 777 aircraft.”
A strong “bang”
The loud explosion was heard shortly after the take-off of United Flight 328. Something had obviously gone wrong.
Some of the 241 people on board the flight from Denver International Airport to Honolulu opened their windows to see a wrecked engine firing and parts of the plane falling.
Others closed their windows, grabbed their loved ones and began to pray. Thousands of feet below, in a suburb of Denver, people on the ground ran to escape to avoid the debris that suddenly began to fall to the ground.
The pilots made a call and then, after returning to the airport, landed safely the Boeing 777-200.
It is noteworthy that there were no reports of injuries either in the air or on the ground. However, the testimonies of the passengers show that the incident caused intense fear in all those involved.
THE Travis Luke he heard a huge noise when he looked out the window. He immediately took out his cell phone and took this photo:
“There was a big bang and the kind of sound you don’t want to hear when you’re on a plane,” said Luke, who was flying with his wife. “I immediately looked down and with fear I saw that the engine on my side was missing.”
“We were very happy that we were not over the ocean, because that was where we were headed,” he added.
Vena said the crew conveyed his composure to the passengers, though he was still worried.
“There was no panic in the crew, there was no panic in the passengers,” he said.
“I was just worried about my children because he was not with us, he was at school and these were our first vacations alone after 21 years.”
“At first I thought he was quite panicked,” said Dan Smith of Portland, Maine, “but I think people did a good job of calming us down.”
Brenda Don, traveling with her children, saw the smoke outside the window. He immediately realized that something was wrong, CNNi reports. “My daughter was sitting at the window and I told her: ‘Don’t look, let’s close the window and pray,'” he said. “It simply came to our notice then. We joined our hands and prayed.
