The vandals tore the banners with the names and photos of the nine victims, including the Romanian Vili Viorel Păun, and threw them on the banks of the Rhine, according to police.
Also, at the memorial site in Frankfurt, the portraits were scribbled and swastikas were drawn in front of them.
The incidents, which allegedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 21, were reported as property destruction. Authorities said federal agents would be involved in the investigation.
The memorials were dedicated to the nine people shot dead by an extremist in Hanau, near Frankfurt. On February 19, 2020, Tobias Rathjen, a 43-year-old German citizen, fatally shot nine people of foreign origin, including the Romanian Vili Viorel Păun, after which he killed his mother and committed suicide. Prior to the attack, he had posted messages related to conspiracy theories and racist content on online platforms.
From Friday to Sunday, actions were held to commemorate the victims, including at Bundesliga football matches.
