The Syrian actor, Basem Yakhour, sparked controversy on social media after he broadcast a video on his YouTube channel exploring in the Damascus markets what can be bought for a thousand pounds (less than half a dollar).
Yakhour pointed out during the video that he accepted the challenge with his friends that he would eventually invite them to “grill” food for 1000 pounds.
Yakhour said that the sum of one thousand Syrian liras was previously sufficient for a small family for two or three days, as a main meal consisting of vegetables, fruits and meat was provided for them, but that currently, this monetary value is only sufficient to buy very limited things.
While wandering around the vendors in the Al-Salihiya neighborhood in Damascus, Yakhour pointed out that, at the current value of 1,000 Syrian pounds, it is possible to buy some food, albeit a little, for example, such as one corn cob, or 5 pieces of crushed nuts.
For one thousand Syrian liras, he buys a small game for children, or a small glass of juice, or two sandwiches of falafel with half a glass of milk.
The Syrian actor also mentioned other simple things that a thousand pounds can buy.
Finally, in the end, the actor went to the vegetable market, where Yakhour grabbed a bag and started packing a few potatoes and onions, at a value of 850 liras, then he took it and went with his staff to a nearby land and started setting fire, and he brought the potatoes that he bought with the onions and started to do them, to prove to the staff Who accompanied him that he won the bet and managed to resolve them to “grill for a thousand pounds”.
Syrians’ reactions to this video clip differed, as some considered that it realistically shed light on the reality of the prevailing social situation, while others deplored his behavior.
