A horrific video clip taken after the Kabul bombings on Sunday, showing an unconscious, bloodied woman with her two children around, sparked a state of shock and anger in Afghanistan.
At least two people were killed and 5 wounded in the bombings, which appeared to be targeting security forces in the Afghan capital, according to police spokesman Firdaus Varamarz.
The video, which was taken immediately after the explosion, shows injured people lying on the ground covered in blood, while two children cry around an injured woman, unconscious.
In the video, the two children screaming, before one of them says, “Mom, get up,” then the videographer asks them to calm down while the injured woman is being moved away.
Reactions from social media users in Afghanistan poured into the video, expressing feelings of horror, anger and shock about the footage, and soon the hashtag “My Mother Stand Up” was published in the Dari language on Twitter.
One user, Ijaz Malkzadeh, wrote on his account: “Watching this woman and her two children in this situation is unbearable.”
Fawzia Kofi, a member of the government peace team negotiating with the Taliban, said: “How can those who commit such acts justify them for themselves while you see children crying over their injured mother? This must stop. ”
A police spokesman later confirmed that the two children were treated for minor wounds, while their mother’s injury was severe.
No one has claimed responsibility for this attack, but the Afghan security forces are permanently vulnerable to such attacks, and the Taliban denied any connection to the incident.
The escalation of violence prompted the administration of US President Joe Biden to announce a review of the agreement signed in February 2020 in Doha with the Taliban, which provides for the complete withdrawal of US forces by May.
