Oil pollution of water and coastal areas in Israel
The country announced a natural disaster and closed the beaches. There is a threat of oil products entering the groundwater.
In the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Israel, an oil spill occurred, as a result of which 150 km of the coastline were polluted and animals, including the Red Book, died. The country’s ecology ministry has announced an environmental disaster, Euronews reports.
According to preliminary data, the spill occurred a few days ago from a vessel located near the coastal waters of Israel. On the beaches of the country, there were tons of a substance resembling fuel oil.
The pollution has affected local flora and fauna, in particular sea turtles and marine ecosystems.
Volunteers have already left for work, but several people have already ended up in hospitals after inhaling oil vapor.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the disaster area. He said: “I just spoke with the Egyptian Energy Minister who is visiting us. And we suggested that all ships run on gas motor fuel, oil products pollute the environment, as it happened here. I think that if we join a sufficient number of countries, then within a few years we will be able to achieve big changes. “
At the moment, there is a threat of oil products entering the groundwater. Environmentalists talk about colossal damage. According to experts, it will take decades to restore the environment. Hundreds of volunteers are involved in cleaning up the coast. Residents of 16 settlements are asked to refrain from visiting the beaches in the coming days.
Let us remind you that animals died in Kamchatka last autumn due to an oil spill.
We will remind, the UN noted the deterioration of the environment. Face shields, gloves, hand sanitizer bottles and food packaging have contributed to more environmental pollution.
