The announcement was made on February 15 by education assistant Stéphanie Léger in an email updating school health measures.
“The new health protocol requires a distance of two meters. The unique menu will allow us to speed up the service and thus allow all children to return,” explained Stéphanie Léger, according to Mediafax.
“In order to suit the taste of the largest number of students, we decided to take out the meat,” she said, stressing that “this is not a vegetarian menu,” as fish or eggs will continue to be served in the 206 schools in Town.
The measure takes effect on Monday.
“If the sanitary situation allows it, the city will return to the menus as we know them, with two menus without meat per week,” the deputy mayor of Lyon responded to opposition critics regarding an ideological decision, reports Le Figaro.
“This menu that leaves students with no choice is absolutely inadmissible,” said outraged Étienne Blanc, chairman of the Conservative group and a former Lyon mayoral candidate. He denounced the fact that environmentalists are using the health crisis to impose their ecological agenda insofar as the mayor’s office had planned to implement a vegetarian menu in schools starting in 2022.
