Former US President Donald Trump has offered North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un a ride home with his presidential plane after their failed nuclear summit in Vietnam in 2019, according to a new documentary about Trump, airing on the British public. broadcaster BBC.
In Trump Takes On the World New details are revealed about Trump’s relationship with Kim, and how the encounters between the two came about and ended. The BBC spoke with people who were there. In a remarkable passage it is about the second summit between the heads of state in Vietnam. It wouldn’t have gone quite according to plan. When talks about North Korea’s nuclear program stalled, Trump would have suddenly left. But not without making a special proposal to Kim.
According to Matthew Pottinger – who was the top Asian expert on Trump’s National Security Council – Trump offered dictator Kim Jong-un a ride home with Air Force One. The president knew that Kim had taken a train ride of several days to get to Hanoi via China (Kim prefers to travel with his own armored train, ed.) ”, He says. “He said, ‘I can take you home in two hours if you want.’ Kim thanked. ”
The fact that the meeting between the two took place at all was actually a surprise. A few months earlier, Trump had called the North Korean leader “Rocket Man” and threatened the “total destruction” of North Korea. However, a high-ranking member of the United Nations – Jeff Feltman – had been invited by North Korea to the capital, Pyongyang, and told the BBC he received a secret message for Kim from Trump. In it, Kim was offered a meeting with Trump.
Once in Pyongyang, Feltman asked if he could speak to the North Korean Foreign Minister in private so that he could get the message across. The latter, however, did not believe him.
In the end, Kim did not answer the question directly, but a few months later let slip to the South Koreans that he was open to meeting the US president. Trump immediately agreed.
The BBC also spoke to Trump’s former national security adviser who attended the summit in question. John Bolton – who can no longer go through one door with Trump – said he drove to the meeting with the president and that Trump was confident he could force a deal once he was in the same room with Kim. “He thought Kim was his new best friend,” said Bolton. “He thought the relationship between the US and North Korea was great because he and Kim were boyfriends. A dangerous perception. ”
Like the first meeting between Trump and Kim in Singapore, the second came to nothing. The same fate met with meeting number three, in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.
