In an e-mail from February 15 addressed to officials offering an update on school health measures, education assistant Stéphanie Léger announced the establishment of a “unique meat-free menu to serve students faster and make meals more efficient.”
This menu will be served from Monday until at least the Easter holidays, he reports Le Figaro.
“The new health protocol requires a distance of two meters. The unique menu will allow us to speed up the service and thus allow all children to return,” explained Stéphanie Léger.
“Match the taste of the largest number” policy
“In order to suit the taste of the largest number of students, we decided to take out the meat,” he added, recalling that “this is not a vegetarian menu,” as fish or eggs will continue to be served in the 206 schools in Town.
“This menu that leaves students with no choice is absolutely inadmissible,” said outraged Étienne Blanc, chairman of the Conservative group and a former Lyon mayoral candidate.
“In the city of gastronomy, the ecological majority takes advantage of the health crisis to adopt ideological measures without any consultation.”
During the campaign, Mayor Grégory Doucet pledged to offer a vegetarian menu of his choice every day of the week in schools. The measure could be implemented “during 2022”, according to Stéphanie Léger.
