Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya stated that Western sanctions against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus are «mockery. “
Reported by The Sunday Times.
She stressed that the US and EU sanctions will not be able to «change the situation in Belarus ”. At the same time, Tikhanovskaya considers it important that the West did not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the elected president of Belarus.
«Only 90 people are under sanctions. This is a mockery, and the regime of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko laughs, ”Tikhanovskaya said.
The former presidential candidate is proposing sanctions that «will undermine the country’s financial system ”. Tikhanovskaya also asks the West to support the opposition media and human rights organizations.
Presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9, 2020, which were accompanied by massive falsifications in favor of Alexander Lukashenko, who alone has ruled the country for the last 26 years.
Soon after the elections, Lukashenko’s main rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was forced to leave for Lithuania.
Protests and strikes in Belarus have been going on for more than six months. Belarusians demand new, fair elections and release of political prisoners.
Many protesters were harassed and thousands were detained. The security forces used stun grenades, rubber bullets, water cannons against the protesters, and severely beat them. Several people have died since the beginning of the protests.
