Ebola: four dead in the DRC

Four people have died of Ebola virus disease since its resurgence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo where the population is opposed to health measures, raising fears of a significant spread of the epidemic.

“Since the epidemic reappeared on February 7, we have already recorded six Ebola cases. We have lost four patients. Two died on Friday and Saturday. We continue to take care of two patients who are treated at the CTE (Ebola Treatment Center) in Katwa ”, told AFP Dr Eugène Syalita, provincial minister of health of North Kivu (east). Two other patients died on February 3 and 10.

“Some families categorically refuse that their homes be disinfected, just like dignified and secure burials», Regretted Dr Syalita, adding that “People have not yet understood that Ebola has just reappeared, everything is not yet clear to them”. As in the past, the population of this region refuses to believe in the existence of Ebola disease and opposes the change imposed to avoid contamination such as avoiding touching the sick or not washing the corpses of the sick. ‘Ebola.

Rejection of health measures

The tenth epidemic, declared on August 1, 2018 in this region, was not eradicated until June 25, 2020 because of the insecurity caused by the activities of armed groups and the resistance of the populations to the health measures put in place to fight against the disease. With more than 2,200 recorded deaths, it is considered the most serious in the history of Ebola in the DRC since its appearance in 1976.
