While their husbands are in prison, the Western media and politicians are trying to make them political figures. Last week in Moscow, about a hundred girls and women formed a chain of support for Julia Navalny, while she was in Germany. They gathered around the monument to Pushkin and Goncharova on the Old Arbat.
Julia arrived in Frankfurt from Moscow on February 10. If the forecast of political scientist Alexander Sosnovsky, who claims that even Chancellor Angela Merkel will receive Julia Navalny and that the wife of the arrested oppositionist will speak before the Council of Europe, comes true, then the West has decided to make her a new leader of resistance to Russian authorities.
Alexei Navalny’s wife was born (1976) in Moscow, her father was a scientist, and her mother worked in the Ministry of Light Industry of the USSR. Julia graduated from the Faculty of International Economic Relations, and then received her master’s degree. She worked in Moscow banks until she married Alexei Navalny, whom she met during her summer vacation in Turkey. Alexei is a lawyer by profession and Julia’s peer. They have two children, Daria (19) who is studying in the USA, and Zahara (12).
At the beginning of this century, Julia and her husband Alexei Navalny were members of the Jabloko party from which they left in 2011. Alexei Navalny became known after 2007 as a blogger and a sharp critic of the government. Julia always supported and defended her husband from the background. She received the maximum publicity during the treatment of Alexei Navalny in Germany, she was next to him in the university hospital “Shariti” in Berlin. Together with her husband, she returned to Russia and was at the trial where Navalny’s suspended sentence was changed to prison.
Until now, Julia Navalny has been called “the first lady of the Russian opposition”, and in the future she could be the leader of the “small opposition”, ie those parties that are not represented in the parliament.
There are also those who think that she could defeat any Russian politician except Putin. It is quite possible that she will run for a member of the Russian parliament, and the elections are already next fall.
DEFEAT OF THE OPPOSITION
The BELARUSIAN opposition has “lost the street”, said the candidate for the presidency of Belarus, Svetlana Tikhanovska, in an interview for Le Temps. According to her, the residents of Belarus expected a quick solution to the political situation, but the “return to democracy” requires more time than expected.
She added that the opposition’s strategy is to “better organize in order to put constant pressure on the regime, until people are ready to take to the streets again, perhaps in the spring.”
