The US ambassador to Russia stated that relations between the countries were deteriorating
The states condemn Russia’s interference in the domestic policy of Belarus and the poisoning of the opposition Navalny.
Relations between the United States and Russia have deteriorated amid Russian interference in the events in Belarus, as well as the poisoning and subsequent condemnation of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. This was stated by US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan in an interview with Present Time on Sunday, February 21.
Sullivan’s predecessor met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He then spoke of the need to improve relations between states. The new ambassador says that “since 2017, this pit (in relations between the countries – ed.) Has become even deeper.”
“There are new problems in this relationship … It’s about the case of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, or interference in the election, the situation in Belarus – these are constant problems that have not been resolved. Therefore, the situation has not improved,” Sullivan said.
We will remind that earlier the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation accused the States of the organization of the protests which broke out after Navalny’s detention. Moscow called on Washington to stop all interference in the internal affairs of foreign states.
The United States also assessed the possibility of a direct military confrontation with Russia. Washington should not rule out the possibility of using nuclear weapons by potential adversaries, the Pentagon said.
