China continues to develop disputed areas of the South China Sea (SCS). The country with the second largest economy is said to have created a city on an island in the ocean.
A new report by the US Naval War College states China built the world’s largest city of 800,000 square miles in 2012 which it named Sansha. That’s the equivalent of 1,700 times New York.
Most of Sansha City is a marine area, including the Paracel Islands which are claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan and the Spratly Islands, among which are claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.
“Once a remote outpost, Woody Island has become a bustling hub of activity,” said the report by China expert Zachary Haver. Bloomberg, Monday (22/2/2021).
The present Woody Island, where the city of Sansha is based, offers port infrastructure, seawater desalination and sewage treatment facilities, new public housing, a functioning judiciary system, 5G network coverage, schools and regular charter flights to and from mainland China.
“Outside Woody Island, the City of Sansha is developing tourism in the Paracel Islands, attracting hundreds of newly registered companies, cultivating aquaculture, and encouraging long-term housing,” he explained.
Sansha is also reportedly ready to attract tourists and several companies to open branches in the archipelago. This proves that China’s claim on the so-called nine dotted lines has become a potential global conflict.
Recently, China enacted a new law (UU) on the country’s maritime security guards. The law is said to help Chinese coast guard to better fulfill their duties and obligations.
Under the law, their naval fleet can shoot foreign ships in the territory because this rule allows all the necessary means to stop or prevent threats from foreign ships.
This has made several SCS claimant states as well as some of China’s traditional rivals inflamed. The Philippines says it is ready to strengthen its naval fleet. Meanwhile the US launched two of its carriers, USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS NImitz, to dispel China in those waters on a freedom of navigation mission.
