Shopping centers, street shops, sports halls … Israel began to reopen its economy on Sunday February 21, the second phase of the third deconfinement since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic. A return to normal made possible by the vaccination campaign, Israeli authorities say.
“We realize that the vaccination works. It is almost a miracle”, enthuses on franceinfo Professor Cyrille Cohen, immunologist at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv and member of the advisory board on clinical trials of Covid-19 vaccines in Israel. Nearly half of the population is now vaccinated.
“The containment succeeded in stopping the spread of this virus, but had not lowered the figures for serious patients”Cyrille Cohen
More than 30% of the Israeli population has received both doses of the vaccine, says the immunologist. But he adds that by taking into account “the population that can be vaccinated today in Israel”, or six to seven million people, “you have half who have already received the two doses, more than three million”. Children under 16 cannot yet be vaccinated in the country.
The immunologist was able to observe “a very clear drop” contamination. And in the month that has passed he has noted “a decrease in mortality of more than 50%”. At the height of the epidemic, Israel had “between 9,000 and 10,000 cases per day. Today, we have fallen to an average of 2,000 to 3,000 cases”. Cyrille Cohen emphasizes that there is “much less hospitalizations of vaccinated people. It’s obvious. When you take the list of people hospitalized today, you see a minority of people vaccinated. It’s quite impressive “. Scientists are “came to the conclusion that the vaccine protects between 91 and 98% of mortality and serious conditions”.
