During his visit to Tel Aviv … Netanyahu to the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, “Warm greetings to my friend Sisi” (video)

Today, Sunday, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tariq Al-Mulla met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during Al-Mulla’s visit to Israel to support the goals of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum, according to the Egyptian minister’s office.

And Netanyahu’s official Twitter account stated that he had opened the meeting, welcoming the Egyptian minister, and told him, “Please convey my warm regards to my friend His Excellency President Sisi.”

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz revealed an agreement he had concluded with his Egyptian counterpart to extend a pipeline linking the Israeli offshore Leviathan field for natural gas with liquefaction stations in northern Egypt “in order to increase gas exports to Europe through liquefaction facilities in Egypt,” according to the Israeli minister’s office.

The meeting of Steinitz and Al-Mulla comes within the framework of the search for new ways to develop natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean. Steinitz said that the two governments are moving forward with the plan to extend the pipeline and are working to reach a formal agreement.

The Leviathan field, located 130 km off the coast of Israel, already supplies its domestic market with gas and exports it to Jordan and Egypt, and its shareholders include Chevron and Delek Drilling.

Leviathan’s partners are exploring options for expanding the project, including the establishment of a floating liquefied natural gas facility or an undersea pipeline to connect the field with liquefaction plants in Egypt, which are either idle or operating at less capacity.

Earlier in the day, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum said that Al-Mulla would meet with Muhammad Mustafa, advisor to the Palestinian President for Economic Affairs, and Yuval Steinitz, the Israeli Minister of Energy.

The statement said that the visit “is to crystallize a common vision and systematic dialogue to develop a regional gas market in light of the entry into force of the forum’s charter, in order to support the efforts of member states to invest their gas reserves and use the existing and future available infrastructure through fruitful and constructive cooperation between the forum countries.”

The forum includes Egypt, the Palestinians, Israel, Cyprus, Greece, Jordan and Italy.
