Seven local members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni) were killed on Sunday in the explosion of their vehicle which ran over a mine.The tragedy occurred in Waraou, a locality located in the town of Dargol in the Tillabéri region. , about a hundred km from Niamey, an area known as “the three borders” between Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
“I got the information around noon (11am GMT), there were seven deaths when the vehicle hit a mine. These are presidents of polling stations and their secretaries, ”recruited by the Ceni, Tidjani Ibrahim Katiella, governor of the Tillabéri region, told AFP. The accident also left three seriously injured according to him.
Despite the insecurity caused by the jihadists, voters voted this Sunday in general calm to choose between the favorite Mohamed Bazoum candidate for power, and the opponent Mahamane Ousmane, former president of the republic.
Bazoum won 39.3% of the vote in the first round, against 17% for Ousmane. The turnout for the first round was 69.7%.
