Protests in Barcelona – how was the fifth day of protests over the rapper’s imprisonment

Protests continued on Saturday in Barcelona, ​​Spain for the fifth day, over the imprisonment of rapper Pablo Asel, who was convicted of insulting the royal house and praising terrorism in songs.

Protesters threw bottles and flares at police, set fire to garbage containers and ransacked shops, Evropeyskaya Pravda reported, citing Reuters.

The police responded by firing foam bullets to disperse the crowd, Catalonia’s regional police Mossos d’Esquadra said on Twitter.

About 6,000 demonstrators have gathered in the city, according to local police.

Protesters also attacked shops on Barcelona’s most prestigious shopping street, Avenue de Gràcia. The protesters also broke windows in the famous Palau de la Musica concert hall.

According to the regional police, nine people were arrested in Catalonia, including three minors. Some of them were arrested for robbing shops.

According to police, nine people were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital.

At the same time, the protest in Madrid was peaceful, while in the northern cities of Pamplona and Lleida, the police brought charges against the protesters.

The Pablo Asel case: what is known

  • A Spanish court sentenced Pablo Asel to nine months in prison for insulting the royal house and praising terrorism in a song about the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and on Twitter.
  • The rapper was supposed to volunteer to report to prison on February 12, but refused to do so.
  • Asel, whose real name is Pablo Rivadulla Duro, was jailed on Tuesday. Police stormed the university building, where Asel had barricaded himself, and arrested him, causing rallies and riots in Barcelona and other Catalan cities.
  • The authorities announced their intention to revise the legislation so that in cases like the Asel case, where no unlawful acts with the use of violence were committed, sentences with a real term of imprisonment could not be passed. However, the sentence to Asel can no longer be formally revised.
