Six gunmen loyal to the regime were killed at dawn on Monday, as a result of the Israeli raids that targeted several locations near Damascus, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) at dawn quoted a military source as saying that “at exactly one o’clock and 18 minutes from dawn today the Israeli enemy carried out an aggression with rocket barrages from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan and the direction of Galilee, targeting some targets in the vicinity of Damascus.” He stressed that the Syrian air defense responded to the missiles, “and dropped most of them,” without giving further details.
In turn, the Syrian Observatory reported that the Israeli raids targeted several sites of the Syrian army, including “headquarters where weapons and missile depots belonging to the Iranians and the militias loyal to them are located.”
The raids resulted, according to the Observatory, in the killing of six non-Syrian militants loyal to the regime. The observatory was unable to determine the nationalities of the dead.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli side about the strikes.
In recent months, Israel has intensified its targeting of military and other sites for Iranian forces and groups loyal to it in several areas in Syria.
On January 13, the Israeli raids on weapons stores and military sites in eastern Syria resulted in the deaths of at least 57 regime forces and groups loyal to Iran, in a toll that is the highest since the start of the Israeli strikes in Syria.
Israel rarely confirms the carrying out of strikes in Syria, but the Israeli army stated in its annual report that during the year 2020 it had bombed about 50 targets in Syria, without providing details about them.
Israel reiterates that it will continue to oppose what it describes as Iran’s attempts to establish its military presence in Syria.
On Sunday, Israel began military maneuvers near the border with Lebanon, to last for four days, the aim of which, according to an Israeli army spokesman, on Twitter, is to “examine the readiness and enhance the capabilities of the Air Force in the face of any combat scenario on the northern front.”
